if you love fantasy, gaming and sci-fi, this world building novel will be just what you want. Interphase pulled me in with strong characters and worlds so well described that I frequently thought this should be a film. I did sometimes feel that this novel is geared to a younger generation of people who have been involved in the gaming world, while I am an older, hard sci-fi and historical fiction fan, but I judged this novel on its own merits. There are echoes of a kinder, gentler, "Game of Thrones" and I will be very interested to see the next book from these two authors.
I met and knew this couple from playing online games together years ago. When they told me they were writing a science fiction novel, I was curious and unsure what to expect. This book is a fun, fast paced romp through both real and digital realities that tests the protagonist and all those around him. In terms of sheer fun, their writing reminds me of Heinlein and many of his excellent books.
This book won't let you down or let you go, nor will it always go quite where you expect it to go either. Don't miss out. Give yourself a treat and read Interphase. If you are a sci-fi and fantasy fiction fan, this will tickle both of those desires at once.
I have found this book to be very enjoyable, never knowing what is coming in the next page. The storyline is wonderfully wrote. Nothing like I have read before. I would highly recommend anyone to read this book. Hope to see more from these authors in the future.
This is absolutely a book for anyone who enjoys a fast-paced action packed fantasy/sci-fi story. Interphase avoids falling into so many traps and tropes that plague other fiction, and the characters will manage to keep you guessing as they avoid falling into one-dimensional stereotypes. This is a strong first work by these authors, and I am looking forward to seeing more.
Interphase reads like a cross between a Final Fantasy game and a Die Hard movie. It's an easy read, breezy and enjoyable, which can be a welcome change from the real world's constant bad news. The characters have their differences and meet some truly difficult challenges, but it never becomes too oppressive. This is not "heavy sci-fi" - think more Total Recall (1990) and less Red Mars - but there are some intriguing/edgy ideas here that kept my brain tickled, all wrapped in enough big action and cocky one-liners to keep the story from getting bogged down.
Not to spoil anything, but something I particularly enjoyed was the cross-over between a gaming world (and one's avatars in that place) into the more mechanical side of a virtual computer system. The characters have occasion to use their avatars' powers for more than just an evening's entertainment, even to the point where they are depending on them to survive. This puts an interesting twist on the whole notion of the "hardcore gamer." If you've ever played WoW or any other party-based MMO, you'll feel at home here immediately.
While I personally prefer my sci-fi a little more on the intellectual side, this was a fun read, and I'd recommend it to anyone who can appreciate a good, rollicking adventure.
I enjoyed reading this book quite a bit. The pacing of the book is fast, while still allowing for a nice amount of depth and character development. A few places left me wishing for a bit more depth, but those places were minor to the overall story. Overall it flowed well and was an fast enjoyable read. I would recommend it to anyone who likes scifi\fantasy genres
A very detailed and action filled adventure. Mixture of fantasy and Sci-Fi. Good character development. Open ended for future stories.
